About Core Science (GCSE Science A)

In year 10 all students will follow the same single award course.

Students will sit six module tests. Two Biology (B1a and B1b), two Chemistry (C1a and C1b) and two Physics (P1a and P1b).

Each module is worth 12.5% of the GCSE. They are 30 minutes long and consist of 36 multi-choice questions.

There are two tiers of entry.
Foundation aimed at students likely to achieve grades G - C and Higher aimed at those likely to achieve grades D - A*

November modules - B1a and C1a       March modules - P1a and B1b        June modules - C1b and P1b

Students will also be assessed on their practical skills (How Science Works) in a centre assessed Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA). This consists of a practical task, in which students are assessed on their ability to record and present data, and a written test based on the task. This is worth 25% of the total GCSE mark.

Students should have the opportunity to attempt at least two ISA's and the best mark achieved will be used.
