Recreational Drugs

It is very likely that at some point you will be offered a recreational drug. It may be at a party, in a pub, at a club or at a friends house.

Before you try any drug for the first time you should know the following:

What will it probably do to you?
Do you know what its effects on your body and brain will be? Is it a stimulant (e.g. amphetamines) that makes your brain work faster or is it a depressant (e.g. tranquilizers) that does the opposite? It is a hallucinogen (e.g. LSD) that will change the way your brain sees things?
Will it harm you?
Some drugs will only harm you if you take a lot of them for a long time. Others my harm you the first time you take them. Some may damage certain parts of your body like your heart or liver. Others may cause mental illnesses. Some people are more likely to suffer mental problems than others and you should know if you are one of these. Don't believe anyone trying to sell you an illegal drug. they just want your money, probably to pay for their own habit.
Are you breaking the law by taking it?
Consider what the consequences of having a criminal record are. Many people take ecstasy without realising that, just like heroin, it is a class A drug. Possession alone can mean 7 years in prison. Even if you don't go to prison having a drugs conviction will certainly affect what kind of jobs you'll be allowed to do in the future.
Is it addictive?
Some drugs are very addictive. I am sure you know a smoker who wishes they could stop but can't because they NEED cigarettes. Now imagine the drug is heroin instead of nicotine. Would you risk becoming addicted?
What exactly are you taking?
Most heroin that one buys on the street has been "cut" with other things. It has been mixed with other powders that look like heroin so that the dealer will make a bigger profit. many heroin users have died of overdoses because they have taken pure heroin for the first time.

REMEMBER

Some people use drugs recreationally. Some of these recreational drugs are more harmful than others. Some of these drugs are legal, some illegal.
The overall impact of legal drugs on health is much greater than the impact of illegal drugs, because far more people use them.
Drugs change the chemical processes in peoples bodies so that they may become dependent or addicted to them and suffer withdrawal symptoms without them. Heroin and cocaine are very addictive.
