Unit 1

In this unit you will build up a portfolio which your teachers will mark. The portfolio is in 2 main sections.

Task A
Produce a summary of about 20 local organisations and businesses that either manufacture or process a product for sale or provide a scientific service (about 10 of each).

Task B
Produce a detailed report on one of these organisations.

Task A

For about 20 businesses / organisations near where you live you must find out and present the following information in a report:

Where is it located?
What product does it produce or what service does it provide?
What raw materials does it use?
How does it use science?
What employees there have scientific qualifications?
What jobs do employees with scientific qualifications do?

How did you locate this organisation?
Where did you get your information about it from?

Your report should consist of:

Task B

For one of the organisations above you must produce a detailed report which includes the following information:

What does the organisation do?
What different types of scientific work is done?
What processes are carried out?
What skills and qualifications do employees have?
What are the roles and responsibilities of scientifically qualified staff?
How do health and safety guidelines apply to this organisation?
What other commercial and legal restraints apply to this organisation?
What ICT is used?
What is the impact of this organisation on the local community?

All of the above is to be presented in a well structured and clearly presented report about 20 sides long.

It is your responsibility to find the information you need for your report. The structure of the report is also your responsibility.

IMPORTANT

For both of these tasks you will be given credit for how independently you carry out these tasks.

Student A
Works very well without being told what to do. Has done lots of excellent research and has written it up well. Has met all deadlines given by the teacher. Arranged several visits which were their idea. Has done most of their reports on organisations that no one else has done. Has produced an original, interesting and attractive portfolio with plenty of detail.
Student B
Wastes a lot of time in lessons chatting or aimlessly searching the internet. Has missed several deadlines set by the teacher. Has shown very little initiative in locating organisations and finding information about them. Tends to sponge ideas off classmates. Has produced a shallow, predictable portfolio containing little original work.
